Concentration of suspended particulate matter and particulate and dissolved organic carbon in the North Sea and English Channel
The dataset has been collected within the Belgian Monitoring Program 'BGCMonit' (2019-2023) and the Belspo funded 'Particles in the North Sea' (RV/21/PiNS) project (2023-2025). The dataset consists of SPM, POC and DOC concentrations derived from water samples taken along transects from the high turbid nearshore to the low turbid offshore

The data have been collected on board of the RV Belgica. At every sampling occasion, three subsamples for SPM concentration were taken and filtered on board using pre-combusted (405°C, 24 hr.), rinsed, dried for 24 hr. at 105°C and pre-weighted 47 mm GF/C filters. After sampling the filters were rinsed with ultrapure water and immediately stored at −20°C, before being dried for 24 hr. at 50°C and weighted to obtain the concentration. The samples for POC were filtered on board using 25 mm GF/C filters (pretreated as for SPM), stored immediately at −20°C, before being analyzed using a Thermo Finnigan Flash EA1112 elemental analyzer. The filtrates for the surface samples were collected in sample tubes for DOC and analyzed using standard spectrophotometric methods with a Skalar autoanalyzer.
