Extent of loss of benthic habitat types dataset supporting the 2024 Belgian MSFD assessment of D6C4
This dataset is part of the 2024 Belgian submission for the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) linked to descriptor 6, criterion 4. This dataset describes and maps the areal extent of EUNIS level 2 broad-scale habitat types and gravel beds in the Belgian part of the North Sea (BPNS), to assess whether the spatial extent of these habitats fluctuates beyond the accuracy margin of the current distribution maps.

Assessed through acoustic remote sensing (multibeam bathymetry and backscatter) and ground-truthing (grab samples and visual observations), following a risk-based monitoring design along pre-defined transects and boxes since 2015, with full-coverage surveys in two selected gravel zones since 2014. Monitoring is coordinated by RBINS within the EU DG ENV technical group TG Seabed. Multibeam echosounder (bathymetry and backscatter); Van Veen grab/boxcorer ground-truth sampling. GIS-based spatial and backscatter classification analysis to delineate broad-scale habitat types and gravel beds.
