Plastic ingestion by fulmars dataset supporting the 2024 Belgian MSFD assessment of D10C3
This dataset is part of the 2024 Belgian submission for the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) linked to descriptor 10, criterion 3. This dataset reports the amount of plastic ingested (stomach contents) by Northern Fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis) beached along the Belgian coast (environmental target: fewer than 10% of fulmars contain more than 0.1g of plastic in their stomach).

Specimens are collected during monthly winter surveys of beached seabirds; stomach dissection follows OSPAR-EcoQO guidelines, performed at international workshops (IMARES-Texel) or in Belgium by trained INBO staff. Monitoring is carried out by INBO under the OSPAR Coordinated Environmental Monitoring Programme, since 2002. Opportunistic collection of beached specimens during monthly winter beached-bird surveys. Dissection and counting/weighing of plastic particles in fulmar stomach contents, following OSPAR-EcoQO guidelines.
