Seabed substrate map, surficial sediments Belgian part of the North Sea [map]. 1:100.000
A multi-scale process-based substrate map of the Belgian Part of the North Sea. A proxy of the surficial sediment type is mapped using automated seafloor classification using derivates of very-high resolution multibeam bathymetry from Flemish Hydrography ( https://www.agentschapmdk.be/en/flemish-hydrography), informed by sediment dynamics and geological processes. The mapping was steered towards a Folk classification (Folk, 1954) representing a maximum of fifteen major textural groups defined on ratios of silt-clay (< 63 µm), sand (63 µm to 2 mm) and gravel (> 2 mm) percentages. The original classification (15 classes) was merged into 6 classes and 4 classes, the latter to align with the requirements of Europe’s Marine Strategy Framework Directive.

The acoustical mapping combined a classification of the range in depth values at 1-m resolution, and of roughness at 10-m resolution. Outcomes were processed to a 50.000 (50k) scale with a minimum mapping unit (MMU) of 0.01 km². Sediment samples, lithological descriptions, visual observations and geological datasets are used for validation. Generalization towards higher mapping scales and metadata assignment followed procedures from EMODnet-Geology (www.emodnet.eu): 100k (MMU: 0.05 km²), 250k (MMU: 0.3 km²) and 1M (MMU: 4 km²).
